FlySafair has urgently requested intervention from South Africa’s transport minister, Barbara Creecy, amid regulatory proceedings regarding foreign ownership restrictions, as of January 20, 2025.
The airline claims that the current interpretation of compliance laws could lead to widespread suspensions and economic damage, threatening its 60pc domestic market share and 1,925 jobs.
On October 31, 2024, the International Air Services Licensing Council determined FlySafair’s non-compliance, although the airline successfully obtained a court interdict requiring further discussions before punitive measures are enacted.
FlySafair is contesting the claim of foreign control, asserting that the councils’ decisions are based on misconceptions, and has requested a ministerial exemption and a delay in any further actions until the South African High Court can clarify legal interpretations.
