The SS United States left Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, marking its first movement since 1996, and is en route to Mobile, Alabama.
Upon arrival in Mobile, preparations will begin to transform the vessel into the World’s Largest Artificial Reef, benefitting the ecosystem near Destin-Fort Walton Beach.
The journey to Mobile will take approximately two weeks, assisted by multiple support vessels, and will involve a 12-month preparation process before deployment.
The exact deployment location is expected to be about 20 nautical miles south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, allowing the vessel to become a diving attraction while fostering marine life.
