Survey finds holiday makers book holidays to switch off from depressing news

Holiday makers are booking travel abroad to escape negative news and daily pressures, a survey from AllClear Travel Insurance has found, with 83pc stating travel helped them switch off.

Exposure to depressing news ranked high among pressures, was cited by 30pc of adults alongside to-do lists, home running, money worries and job insecurity. Parents told interviewers of a higher need for breaks, with 89pc viewing holidays as essential compared with 79pc of adults without children.

Despite the desire to escape news, 22pc checked headlines on phones during holidays, and only 16pc managed phone-free trips. Many adults are consideringholidays with wellbeing services such as meditation classes, gym sessions and stress management courses.

The relentless to-do lists, money worries and the depressing news – what is happening domestically in politics, the cost of living and the economy ,  these factors are pushing more people to appreciate the importance of a holiday to switch off.”
