Minister Heather Humphreys has announced €16.1m investment in 69 outdoor recreation projects in Ireland, focussing on Greenways, Blueways, Forest Parks, Cycling Facilities, and new walking trails

Projects include improvements to tidal pools, greenways, coastal walkways, and amenity trails across the country.

Carlow 

  • Phase 2 of the Borris Village to Barrow Way footpath including fencing, signage and interpretation panels. €175,500

Cavan 

  • Phase 2 of the Killykeen Greenway, improve access on the Killeshandra side for cyclists by creating a looped route €178,371
  • enhancement of the lakeshore amenity , improving access to the water and walking trail at Crover Shore Mountnugent €180,417
  • Development of an upland walkway on scenic Slieve Rushen in West Cavan. €200,000

Clare 

  • Kilrush Wood River Walk & Cycleway Developing a river walk/cycle route at rear of Frances St, Kilrush linking Cappa Road to Stewart Street. €165,420
  • Trail-head and 480m trail to link the settlement of Tuamgraney to the existing Lough Derg Blueway Amenity trail. €191,700
  • Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk – Repair and upgrade works to 2 sections of the existing coastal path. The first section is 1300m from Hags Head towards the Cliffs of Moher Centre and the second section is 1800m from Lough towards Doolin. €500,000

Cork

  • Blackwater Way Trail improvement and enhancement works along the 86km section of the Blackwater Way in Cork(Avondhu) €200,000
  • Beach Disability Access, provide new and upgrade existing pedestrian access to beaches at Garretstown, Garrylucas, Owenahincha and Inchydoney in West Cork. €200,000
  • Development of Durrus Coastal Walkway €200,000

Donegal 

  • Millside Walk Fintown To develop a 2km recreational walking path and associated amenities for public use looping through Coillte forestry on the banks of the River Finn. €200,000
  • MacManus Estate Rossylongon To improve and enhance the recreational amenity and associated historic cultural heritage of the former MacManus Estate €200,000
  • Muckish Railway Walk: upgrade and complete a specific 1.5km and final section of the Muckish Railway Walk to greenway standard. €500,000

Galway 

  • Glinsk Heritage Park repair and upgrade of 2km of existing trails to improve accessibility €200,000
  • Castlegrove Woods Tales & Trails aims to develop both Castlegrove Woods and Barracks as Nature Trails, Historic Trails and Heritage Display centre. €47,821
  • Ionad Pobail an Mháma – Car Park The construction of a car park which will facilitate cars and buses for those who enjoy walking the western way. €172,583

Kerry 

  • Ballyseedy Wood Amenity Trail To further extend Ballyseedy Wood Amenity Trail to the west along the southern bounds of the Ballygarry Estate Hotel and Spa and connect with the number of marked trails located within Ballyseedy Wood and SAC. €200,000
  • Recreational Enhancement at three Blue Flag Beaches – Provision of recreational support facilities at 3 Blue Flag Beaches – Ballinskelligs, Banna and Rossbeigh which include cycle stands, seating and picnic area, drinking fountains, shower area and Lifeguard facilities. €198,000
  • Jarvey Lane Repair and Upgrade Project To repair and upgrade the Jarvey Lane, 1 km pedestrian/cyclist surface which runs between Killarney town and the main entrance of Killarney National Park. €200,000
  • Milltown – Construction of a 1.5km extension to the Kilderry Wood Walk, creating a looped countryside amenity walk of 3.1km. The project also includes the provision of 600m footpath to link Milltown and to Kilderry Wood Entrance. €445,140

  • Grand Canal – Ballyteague Accessibility Works €155,700

Kilkenny

  • Woodstock Gardens & Arboretum Accessibility and Inclusivity Enhancement Scheme creating an environment that is easily accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible regardless of the users age, size, ability or disability. €200,000
  • The Ennisnag Loop Walk – Walking Trail and Amenity Area – Development of a new 2.3km way-marked loop walking trail from the village of Stoneyford out into the townlands of Lawcus, Ennisnag and Cotterelsbooly. A new trailhead within the Community Centre grounds in Stoneyford and it includes upgrades to the Orchard riverside amenity area and interpretative signage €198,630
  • Castlecomer Discovery Park Bike Trail – (Phase One of Two) To construct Phase One of an 8.5km long bike trail within the confines of the Castlecomer Discovery Park. Under Phase One 6.9km’s will be delivered and works will include trail signage, seating, bike parking and all other associated works. €500,000

Laois 

  • Triogue Way Recreational Enhancement The provision of recreational enhancements on the Triogue Way to encourage increased use of this walking and cycling trail. €200,000
  • Durrow Community/Family Cycle Trails Upgrade of existing walking routes into two looped cycle and walking trails suitable for multi-use outdoor recreation. €492,750

Leitrim 

  • Lough Melvin Eco Park Water Hub Water activity hub through the upgrading, extension & repurposing of an old boathouse on the shores of Lough Melvin. €198,900
  • Parke’s Castle Car Park To upgrade the public car park at Parke’s Castle, Co. Leitrim and increase the access to Lough Gill. €63,631
  • Sheemore Carpark Construction of a new carpark to allow visitors to safely access the historical and scenic Sheemore Hill €130,500
  • Drumshanbo Narrow Gauge Trail. Construction of a 960m trail in Drumshanbo, linking the Dowra Road to the Church Road and extended onto the Ballinamore road. €401,231

Limerick 

  • Ashford & Raheenagh Creation of a 2.4km off road walk/cycle link between the villages of Raheenagh and Ashford. Allowing the trails around Killeedy Eco Park to be linked to the Broadford Ashford walking trails. €195,208
  • The Ryder Cup Way An accessible 1.4km, recreational eco trail, illuminated with low level LED lighting. It weaves its way through woodland, alongside hedgerows and will be further planted with native species trees, nesting & bug boxes, bio-diversity ponds, solar PV interpretative station, climate information stations and picnic areas €399,983

Longford 

  • Granard Lights Enhancement of the existing Granard Greenway through the extension of the walkway and the provision of lighting along the full length of the walkway €200,000
  • Moyne Amphitheatre and Legga Car Park Construction of a new car park , installation of safety barrier along the R198 and landscaping to existing amphitheatre site to support the existing Sli na Slainte walkway €200,000

Louth 

  • Templetown Blue Flag Beach Accessibility Project This project will provide easier access to beach facilities – construction works to include disabled parking bays, accessible picnic areas & works to existing Pathways €35,388

  • Wild Atlantic Way Céide Coastal Path. The development of c.15km of coastal path along the iconic Céide Coast linking the Céide Fields Neolithic Site to the Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point at Downpatrick Head. €200,000
  • Raheen Wood Biodiversity Trail Develop a Biodiversity Trail at Raheens Wood to adjoin the existing woodland trail. The trail will include a raised board walk / pathways through biodiversity areas, which will include areas for bike parking, seating, recreation and education. €200,000
  • Martin Neary Woodland Trails To expand the existing trailhead to allow for additional car parking, extend the width of the existing paths to allow for multi access use and to upgrade same to a macadam finish together with the installation of Bollards, gates signage, picnic tables, Bike Parking, fencing and landscaping. €200,000
  • Belmullet Tidal Pool. Upgrading and improving the visitor and user experience to Mayo’s only Coastal Outdoor Tidal Pool located in Belmullet in North Mayo. €295,974

  • Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, Enhancement of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway including provision of information panels, benches and planting as well as creation of a website with comprehensive visitor information. €200,000
  • Link to Parc Rath Chairn. Construct a walkway to provide a direct link to the amenity park which will allow pedestrian and cyclists to access the park directly. €140,400
  • Ratoath Walking Trail Upgrade of existing section of the trail and link to another section to allow greater access to the amenity €200,000
  • Greenway Kilberry link Construct a link (footway/cycleway) between Kilberry village and the Boyne to Lakelands Greenway at Gibbstown together with a designated car parking area to maximise access to the greenway. €500,000

Monaghan 

  • Ballybay Wetlands Public Path Enhancement Plan. Replacement of existing timber boardwalk with an environmentally and eco-friendly plastic boardwalk, upgrade of existing paths, installation of picnic benches and shelters around the walkway to include information signs about the biodiversity of the site €198,833
  • Gortnawhinny Lido. Creation of a man-made beach area along the shore of Gortnawhinny Lake Clones and a car parking area. €119,250
  • Mullan Village Rural Walking Trail. Development of a rural walkway in the environs of Mullan Village to offer the public a space to exercise and enjoy the countryside. €199,653

Offaly

  • Lough Boora Discovery Park, Upgrade of the trail network around Lough Boora Discovery Park’s core visitor hub area to make it safe and fully accessible €500,000

Roscommon 

  • Enhancement of riverside trail along the Boyle River Enhancing the current riverside trail along the Boyle River (known locally as The Lawns, Boyle) to provide a more accessible and attractive recreational amenity €199,100
  • Donamon Outdoor Recreation Area Development Development of visitor orientation point, and upgrade to existing trails within Bracklin forest, improving quality and accessibility. €500,000

Shannon Basin

Sligo

  • Sligo Way Rehabilitation Rehabilitation of approximately 1.8km of upland Sligo Way long- distance walking trail on the Ballygawley Mountains between Union Wood and Slish Wood at Castledargan. €200,000
  • Colga Lake/ Ray Flynn Way Development of a new scenic trail (the Ray Flynn Way ) at Ballure providing access to a Lough Colga picnic facility, enhancement of existing lay-by to create a trailhead. €126,000

Tipperary 

  • Lough Doire Bhile Enhancement Works Upgrade and enhance the existing amenity at Lough Doire Bhile. The enhancement works will provide a fully accessible amenity area to be enjoyed by every member of the public. €108,000
  • Widening & Signage Improvements along Clonmel to Carrick on Suir Blueway Widening of approx. 3.0km of narrow sections of 20km Suir Blueway between Clonmel & Carrick on Suir including new finger-post trail markers and additional tourist information panels €500,000

Waterford
