Expedited passage of the Short Term Letting and Tourism Bill was prioritised at the Cabinet subcommittee on housing yesterday.
After last night’s subcommittee meeting, the government said it will prioritise the delivery of social and starter homes, as well as “cracking down on short-term rents” targeting companies like AirBnb.
Fears have been expressed within the tourism industry that this will subetantially reduce Ireland’s stock of 34,00 tourism rental properties.
The government says it will prioritise the development of social and starter homes while introducing stricter regulations on short-term rentals.
Ministers have been tasked with ensuring the delivery of essential utilities to support housing developments and implementing the Planning and Development Bill, which includes provisions for new compulsory purchase order (CPO) legislation.
A review of rent pressure zones (RPZs) was agreed upon during the meeting, despite concerns from tenants in RPZ areas who worry about potential rent increases if the system is allowed to expire at the end of the year.
