Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has announced a large investment in Cork’s rail network, including the addition of eight new commuter stations, electrification of the network, new rail carriages, and a maintenance depot. The plans include:
- New stations at Blackpool, Monard, Tivoli, Carrigtwohill West, Waterrock, Ballynoe, Blarney and Dunkettle.
- A new fleet maintenance depot to cater for a new electrified fleet of up to 150 carriages. Design development and review will take place prior to confirmation of the preferred depot location.
- Electrification of the Cork Commuter network.
- Upgrade of nine existing commuter stations on the Cork network.
Cork’s population is expected to increase significantly by 2040, making the investment in public transport infrastructure crucial for the future of the city.
The plan aims to improve train capacity and frequency, connect communities, and address the lack of park-and-ride facilities in Cork.
The projects are funded by the National Transport Authority under Project Ireland 2040, with proposals for a light rail network and support from Cork Chamber of Commerce to become a climate-neutral city by 2030.
