Clare Council unveils bust in honour of Duty Free & Shannon airport pioneer Brendan O’Regan

Clare County Council has unveiled a bust of Brendan O’Regan at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis, honouring his impact on industry, tourism, and peacebuilding.

Mr O’Regan’s career started in hospitality at the Foynes flying boat base in 1943, leading to his establishment of the first duty-free shop at Shannon Airport in 1947.

The Shannon Free Airport Development Company, founded by Dr O’Regan in 1959, led to the creation of Ireland’s first industrial free zone, significantly boosting regional foreign investment.

Chair of Clare council Alan O’Callaghan praised Dr O’Regan for his dedication and vision, underscoring how his contributions continue to inspire the community and promote economic growth.

Clare County Council plans to create an exhibition space at Bunratty Castle, which will further celebrate the life and achievements of Dr O’Regan.

Alan O’Callaghan shared “It is a great honour to unveil this bust of Brendan O’Regan, a visionary whose tireless dedication has left a lasting legacy in Clare and beyond, His pioneering work in industry, tourism, and peace continues to inspire us all. This bust stands as a tribute to his extraordinary achievements and the enduring inspiration he provides for us all to innovate and build bridges.”
