The operator of Cleaver East, Banta Restaurants Ltd, is blocking plans to expand The Clarence Hotel despite previously supporting the project.
An Bord Pleanála has received an appeal from Banta Restaurants Ltd against Dublin City Council’s approval of a threefold increase in hotel size.
Dublin City Council granted planning permission for 104 new hotel rooms in April, which led to concerns regarding the redevelopment’s future.
Aidan Crowe, director of Banta Restaurants Ltd, argues that the site should focus on residential development to address Dublin’s housing shortage.
Crowe stated that further tourist accommodation could harm the city centre’s livability and conflict with growth and sustainability policies.
Aidan Crowe shared: “approving further tourist accommodation contributes to the gradual erosion of the city centre as a lived-in space, undermining national and local policy objectives around compact growth and sustainable communities.”
Initially the restaurant group wrote to the council saying: “The proposed works represent an essential investment in the improvement and modernisation of this iconic Dublin property, which will benefit not only the hotel but the wider local economic and tourist community.”
