A 25-page report from lifeguards at Dollymount Strand, submitted to Dublin City Council (DCC), highlights critical staff shortages and issues affecting the lifeguard service, including only three lifeguards recruited for the high season when seven are recommended.

Issues in the report include substandard equipment, delays in repairing rescue equipment, and inadequate facilities at the beach, such as rusted huts with black mould.

Water Safety Ireland CEO Joanne Walsh addressed the responsibility of local authorities in lifeguard recruitment, competition with other industries for seasonal staff, and the training of over 2,000 lifeguards in 2023.

The report also calls for improved contracts and pay for lifeguards, expressing dissatisfaction with current treatment compared to lifeguards in other countries like Australia and New Zealand. DCC is reviewing the issues raised and will respond accordingly.
