FIRST for Leitrim as Carrick-on-Shannon wins Tidy Towns award

Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim secured the overall winner title in SuperValu Tidy Towns 2025 and also claimed the small town category.

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary thanked 30,000 volunteers who served communities in all weathers.

The SuperValu TidyTowns competition, organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, has run since 1958 and received SuperValu sponsorship since 1991.

This year saw 929 towns participate, marking the highest number of entries in the competition’s history.

Entries undergo independent assessment by adjudicators in an anonymous process during June, July, and August, evaluated under eight criteria including community involvement, public spaces, sustainability, biodiversity, and litter control with 550 marks available.

Carrick is the first winner from Leitrim, the counties that have won the award in its 70-year-history are 8 – Donegal, 7 – Meath, 6 – Cavan, Tipperary, 5 – Longford, 4 – Cork, Kerry, 3 – Clare, Mayo, 2 – Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Louth, Monaghan, Roscommon, Waterford, Westmeath, Wicklow, 1 – Leitrim, 0 – Kildare, Galway, Offaly, Sligo, Wexford,
