Progress on securing €5m euro to reopen Dunguaire Castle has stalled. Galway County Council has pursued State funding for the project since 2023. Dunguaire Castle closed in 2022 on safety grounds and remains in the ownership of the Shannon Airport Group.
Louis O’Hara shared “This was done for Clare and Limerick County Councils to allow them to acquire assets from the Shannon Group. It is a real missed opportunity for Kinvara and surrounding areas particularly as we come into the summer season again. The fundamental issue is that Galway County Council needs financial support from the Government to acquire the property and bring it to a safe standard. It is an iconic landmark on the Wild Atlantic Way on the edge of Kinvara village.”
