Located in the affluent suburb of Hyde Park, Sandton, Southern Sun Hyde Park Sandton is a stylish, 3-star hotel directly connected to the iconic Hyde Park Corner shopping mall, offering a blend of luxury, convenience, and accessibility.

The hotel is in Johannesburg’s exclusive Hyde Park suburb, known for its tree-lined streets and high security. The connection to Hyde Park Corner mall provides immediate access to high-end designer stores, gourmet restaurants, and luxury boutiques.

While not directly part of the hotel, The Forum Hyde Park, a chic new event venue by The Forum Company, opened in October 2024 within the Hyde Park Shopping Centre. Designed with green and white marble finishes, rooftop gardens, and versatile spaces, it enhances the Hyde Park experience for guests hosting or attending events nearby. We dined at the plush Samba sushi, mixing our Japanese cuisine with some of the finest South African fillet steaks we have ever tasted.

It is a 10-minute drive from Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, offering extensive shopping, dining, and entertainment. Nearby attractions include Delta Park (15 minutes), Johannesburg Botanical Gardens (20 minutes), the Apartheid Museum, and the Cradle of Humankind (both under an hour). The Sandton Gautrain station in nearby.

Our room was 723 a corner room with windows looking down on the pedestrianised area of Johannesburg. The design was unusual, a pillar in the middle of the room with a mirror on the window side and a 55 inch television towards the bed. There was complimentary water and intriguing décor with an emphasis on exotic fabrics for which the region is famous, including three pieces of artwork over the bed, a small round table, couch and chair, and some show-books, Art Records Covers, The Rise of David Bowie, a two volume history of printed fabrics, the Expanding Universe, and an Eric Hekel. The bathroom had separate toilets and shower, and an invitingly deep free standing bath by the window, the sink shelf had Fig and Felijoa toiletries, and large hand dispensers units rather than small bottles.  There were scented oil stickes beside the writing desk.

Security is tight. You had need to your room key to activate the lift, but also a barrier to get you access to where the lift leaves from. The barrier goes downwards, not to the side, which is a bit of a surprise when it opens.
