The Office of Public Works reported harassment of a contractor at Castletown House during essential repairs on the heating system.

The incident took place at 7am, with the contractor’s vehicle unaccompanied due to the timing being outside public opening hours.

The OPW stated it will not tolerate harassment on its properties while respecting community rights to peaceful protest.

Access for essential contractors was blocked by protesters, although it was confirmed to be “successful” the following day.

The Castletown Foundation urged support for the OPW’s proposal, stating it is crucial for the house and parklands to remain accessible to visitors.

Over €500,000 damage was recently caused to P{PW vehicles in storage at nearby Donaghcumper.

The OPW shared: “The OPW respects the rights of the community to protest peacefully however, all workers have a right to dignity and respect in their workplace and have a right to a safe workplace. It is not possible to maintain a House of national historic significance and an estate of 227 acres without essential vehicles. It is imperative that there is not another lost summer at Castletown.”
