Cillian Murphy and his wife, artist Yvonne McGuinness, were officially granted planning permission by Kerry County Council on 26 February 2026 for the major redevelopment of the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle.

The project aims to transform the historic 1919 venue, which closed in 2021,into a not-for-profit community arts centre. Key details of the approved vision include:

Retention of the cinema alongside new facilities for concerts, exhibitions, and rehearsals.

Creation of dedicated residential studios to support visiting artists and creators. A new café, bar, and restaurant, designed to act as a “living room” for the town. The project has already secured €933,000 through the Government Rural Regeneration Fund (RRF) following an application after extensive public consultation and received a large number of letters in support from the local community.

While approved, the council attached 13 conditions to the permission, primarily addressing concerns raised by residents regarding parking and potential impacts on adjoining properties.

The project supports local cultural heritage and acts as a draw for visitors to the Kerry town by preserving and revitalising a historic venue that contributes to regional tourism and community engagement.
