Ethiopian Airlines suspends Tigray region flights amid clashes

Ethiopian Airlines confirmed suspension of all flights to the Tigray region including Makale Indaselassie and Axum from 29 January due to reports of renewed clashes.

The airline operates the only scheduled services to these three airports with frequencies of 51 weekly to Makale and 14 weekly each to the others. A spokesman confirmed cancellations without specifying duration.

Diplomatic sources indicate fighting in disputed western Tigray areas has heightened concerns over the 2022 African Union-brokered peace deal which ended a two-year conflict. Tensions have risen with the electoral board revoking the Tigray People’s Liberation Front licence and internal party divisions adding instability.
